About Us

VIU Chancellor, Shawn Atleo, meets with youth researchers from the Preservation and Prevention project

The  Centre for Healthy Communities Research (CHCR) engages in collaborative research with policy makers, health care and social service practitioners and community members to address multiple determinants of health (social, economic, environmental, physical) for the promotion of healthy communities.  The  Healthy Communities approach is based on five essential strategies to build on a community’s existing capacity  to improve community health and well-being and to create a sense of community.

Multi-sectoral collaboration

Political commitment

Healthy public policy

Citizen participation

Asset-based community development

The core activities of the Centre will be to: develop 3-5 clearly defined research themes related to healthy communities;  support research activities with facilitation and coordination; and, provide training in skills for a healthy communities approach.
